The higher octane rating means the fuel burns slower (less knock) and the higher compression the motor can burn said fuel at a faster rate. A lower compression motor burns fuel at a slower rate so you can use a lower octane (faster burning). If you use premium you are getting worse fuel mileage and power IMO but I never tried. Apr 25, 2014 · After going through a minor tune up in yamaha the technician advised me to stop using xcs, which is red in color. He said it would be best to keep away from red colored fuels since they are not good for the engine. He recommended blue colored ones and mentioned Shell vpower. Xcs is 95 octane. Low octane = less fuel burned, or more fuel unburned, potentially, when it happens. (This will cause more exhaust burn after the piston, carbonization in the piston and exhaust, will run cooler internally but overheat the exhaust, produce more NOX fumes.)
